Abstract
⺠Soils quickly develop in the proglacial area. ⺠Smectite is continuously formed and can be used as a proxy for weathering intensity. ⺠In the proglacial area, smectite in the topsoil is however spatially highly scattered. ⺠Topography and vegetation exerted a significant influence on smectite formation. ⺠Green alder, a flat topography and grass heath promote smectite formation.
