Abstract
► Soils quickly develop in the proglacial area. ► Smectite is continuously formed and can be used as a proxy for weathering intensity. ► In the proglacial area, smectite in the topsoil is however spatially highly scattered. ► Topography and vegetation exerted a significant influence on smectite formation. ► Green alder, a flat topography and grass heath promote smectite formation.
