Abstract
We show that the degrees of the complex irreducible characters of a finite group G are determined by the number of expressions of the identity as a product of k commutators for each k. Similar results are proved regarding real-valued irreducible characters, and the methods are then combined with modular methods to obtain results about real-valued p-blocks of defect 0.
