Abstract
We show a remarkable link between the direct sum and the usual sum of m positive semi-definite matrices. The direct sum is a kind of average of m copies of the usual sum. This averaging is applied to obtain several inequalities related to the Rotfel'd majorizations for convex/concave functions.
