Abstract
In this paper, we characterize four models of concatenation of a block code and a convolutional code from a linear systems theory viewpoint. We provide the input-state-output representation of these models and we give conditions in order to get a non-catastrophic concatenated convolutional code with minimal representation. Lower bounds on the free distances of the concatenated codes are also developed.
