Abstract
In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem for a class of complex conservation laws, which was introduced by P.D. Lax. Under the assumption of genuinely nonlinear in some directions on characteristic fields, we prove that the smooth solution of the Cauchy problem must blow up in finite time and give a sharp estimate on the life span of the smooth solution.
