Abstract
We consider the following three closed algebraic ideals of operators on a Banach lattice: compact, strictly singular, and inessential operators. Suppose that 0⩽A⩽B and B is compact or strictly singular. We show that, under certain assumptions, A (or some power of A) is inessential.
