Abstract
By a simple trick we may generalise the rook polynomial for an n×nn×n chessboard to various two-dimensional surfaces, the conventional chessboard corresponding to the torus. In the case of the Möbius band and the Klein bottle, there is a close connection to graceful labellings of graphs.
