Abstract
The hyperdeterminant of a polynomial (interpreted as a symmetric tensor) factors into several irreducible factors with multiplicities. Using geometric techniques these factors are identified along with their degrees and their multiplicities. The analogous decomposition for the μμ-discriminant of polynomial is found.
► The decomposition of the symmetrized hyperdeterminant is found via dual varieties. ► The factors and multiplicities of the symmetrized hyperdeterminant are identified geometrically. ► The splitting of the symmetrized hyperdeterminant is generalized to μμ-discriminants.
