Abstract
This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the VII International Drumlin Symposium (Westport, Ireland) in May 2009. This introduction to the volume first outlines the significance of drumlins as a key subglacial bedform, gives a brief history of drumlin research, and identifies the major themes of subglacial research, namely mapping and morphometry, sedimentary and ice-bed processes, and glacier dynamics. It then summarises in turn the major findings of the papers in this volume, linking them to each other and to the wider literature. Finally, this introductory paper considers future developments in studies of drumlins and the subglacial environment.
