Abstract
► High-velocity friction experiments demonstrate coseismic serpentine dehydration. ► Serpentine dehydration was caused by both the friction heating and heat diffusion. ► FTIR and TG-DSC analyses show that all water in the slipping zone was released. ► Rapid thermal pressurization led to a pronounced weakening of seismic fault zone.
