Abstract
Research Highlights► Island arcs represent the addition of new mantle-derived crust and mineral deposits. ► Arcs record the presence of plate and subplate boundaries, especially in ancient orogens. ► This issue discusses the roles island arcs played in the evolution of convergent margins. ► Emphasis is given to the Palaeozoic evolution of the east Gondwana margin.
