► Detrital zircon U-Pb data used to reveal the Hengyang basin provenance. ► Provenance shifted from the North China Craton to the Indosinian granitic plutons. ► A southeastern coastal mountain belt existed during the Late Cretaceous. ► Basin provenance is consistent with Mesozoic tectonic setting.
