Abstract
⺠The dipolarity of geodynamo models is caused by only one fundamental dynamo mode. ⺠There is an energy transfer from the fundamental mode towards higher-order modes. ⺠This leads to non-dipole contributions of the magnetic field. ⺠We studied this process applying the mode analysis developed by Hoyng (2009). ⺠We find satisfactory agreement between theoretical and numerical results.
