Abstract
In this paper, a study with ultrasonic tomography applied to evaluate heat induced limestone decay and consolidation treatment is presented. Specimens of a Portuguese limestone-Lioz were heated at 600 °C and then submitted to consolidation treatment with ethyl silicate or nanolime. Petrophysic (capillary absorption coefficient, open porosity and bulk density) and elastic parameters (VP, VS, VP/VS, Ï, E, μ and K) were measured in order to characterize the sound specimens, their modification after heating and also after its consolidation treatment. Our study confirms the strong influence of fire damage on physical and mechanical properties and demonstrates the good strengthening action achieved with the consolidating action. Seismic tomography also allowed the visualization of the impregnation capability of the consolidants.
