Abstract

•This study investigates the debonding mechanism of bonded concrete overlay.•A set of numerical analysis was performed to evaluate the horizontal shear stress.•The maximum bond stresses were closed to the bond strength criterion.•Debonding may be possibly occurred due to cyclic horizontal traffic loading.

Debonding failures of bonded concrete overlay occur due to the loss of bonding, excessive normal tensile stresses, or horizontal shear stresses at the interface. Generally the normal tensile stress may be main cause of debonding. However, horizontal shear stress caused by stopping and starting of vehicle at the traffic congested section and toll booth can lead debonding. In this study, a set of numerical analysis was performed to evaluate the horizontal shear stress at the interface of bonded concrete overlay according to horizontal traffic loading. It was found that horizontal shear stresses were closed to the bond strength criterion.
