Abstract

•Highly active Ni2P supported on core-shell Al2O3@TiO2 is described for first time.•The hydrophobic TiO2 shell can enhance water resistance, HDO activity and stability.•The O-free products yield of Ni2P/A@T improved by 40% compared to Ni2P/Al2O3.

Highly active Ni2P catalyst supported on core-shell structured Al2O3@TiO2 for hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of benzofuran (BF) was prepared and the effect of water on the performance for BF HDO over as-prepared catalyst was studied. The hydrophobic TiO2 shell can enhance the catalytic activity, water resistance and HDO stability of the Ni2P/Al2O3 catalyst. The Ni2P/A@T exhibited the highest HDO activity of 95% with O-free products yield of 87%, which is an increase of 40% when compared with that found for Ni2P/Al2O3 (47%).
