Abstract
The effects observed with induced hypocrisy, a cognitive dissonance paradigm, can be interpreted as based on inconsistency between prosocial attitudes and daily opposite behaviors. Induced hypocrisy can be effective to obtain responsible and citizenship behavior. The aim of this paper is to provide an alternative explanation to Aronson's one (1999) which involve self-concept. This alternative explanation follows on from Gawronski's research (2012) which considers inconsistency central in cognitive dissonance and does not refer to the self-concept. We propose an explanation of induced hypocrisy focused on inconsistency and not on the threat of the self. This explanation and Aronson's one are put to the test of the research done in the field of induced hypocrisy in order to determine if they are appropriate to account for all observed effects.
