Abstract

•Bi hollow nanospheres were used in photoreduction of Cr(VI) for the first time.•Bi hollow nanospheres exhibited remarkable visible-light photocatalytic activities.•The narrow band gap and hollow structure benefit the high photocatalytic efficiency.•Bi hollow nanospheres are also capable of the photodegradation of organic dye.

Uniform bismuth hollow nanospheres with efficient Cr(VI) adsorption capacities were used to the photodegradation of highly toxic Cr(VI) for the first time, which exhibited outstanding visible-light photocatalytic abilities for the reduction of Cr(VI) to less toxic Cr(III).
