Abstract
												•Concentration polarisation (CP) and fouling in skim milk UF are critically reviewed.•Fouling in skim milk UF is primarily due to proteins; mineral fouling is minor.•Recent studies of casein micelle packing are discussed in relation to CP and gel layers.•Progress towards mathematical modelling of skim milk UF is reviewed.•Analysis of fouling and cleaning studies indicate ways to improve membrane cleaning.
