Abstract
High solid content polyurethane-acrylate (PUA) hybrid emulsions have been sucessfully synthesized by monomer dilution method and emulsification method respectively. The effects of dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) and emulsifiers (sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and nonyl phenol polyoxyethylene ether (OP-10)) on the structure and the properties of emulsions were investigated. Dimethylol propionic acid and emulsifiers content increase brings about smaller particles. However, the storage stability of emulsions is attributed to the increased level of dimethylol propionic acid and emulsifiers, but the effect is not a complete synergy. The emulsion with 3Â wt% DMPA or 2Â wt% SDS and OP-10, which revealed the pseudoplastic behavior, showed good water resistance and excellent adhesion performance on poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) packaging film. These results obtained point to the strong potential in PUA hybrid emulsion synthesis with optimal proportion for DMPA and emulsifiers.
