•Co/silica (Eu-Co/SiO2) catalysts with 1, 5, 10, and 20% Eu were synthesized.•The catalysis with 1%Eu showed the highest FT activity.•XANES analysis revealed that the addition of 1% Eu enhanced the reducibility of the Co oxides.
Co/silica (Eu–Co/SiO2) catalysts with 1, 5, 10, and 20% Eu were synthesized and their catalytic activities towards Fischer–Tropsch synthesis were investigated in a slurry-phase reactor. The addition of 1% Eu improved the activity of the Co/SiO2 catalyst, while more than 5% Eu reduced it. XRD and XANES analyses revealed that Eu has a negligible effect on the Co metal particle sizes of the reduced catalysts and that 1% Eu enhanced the reducibility of the Co oxides while excess Eu was ineffective. This is the first report demonstrating the promotion effect of Eu on FTS reaction of Co/SiO2 catalyst.
