Abstract
:Powerful variable frequency drives (VFD) are becoming more widely used in power systems. However, there are only a few works addressed to VFD motor dynamics that are suitable for large-scale power system stability studies. The paper proposes a fundamental frequency simplified model of the VFD, which provides an adequate modeling for the study of electromechanical transients in large-scale power systems. Its implementation was carried out in Power System Toolbox (PST), an open source software available for both scientific and commercial purposes. The model was complemented by a number of protection and control strategies that allow to perform adequate modeling for severe disturbances.
