AlCl3-promoted MCM-41-supported platinum catalysts with different Al–Pt interaction sequences were prepared for tetralin hydrogenation under sulfur-containing condition. Platinum dispersion and acidity of the catalysts were improved by the introduction of aluminum. The aluminum-containing catalysts have similar acidity. Al–Pt interaction leads to the formation of electron-deficient platinum (Ptδ +). A great improvement in sulfur-tolerance was observed on the catalyst that aluminum is grafted after the supporting of platinum.
