Abstract
This paper applies the equivalent local mode I concept to the fracture assessments of round V-notches under multiaxial loading. The original idea, successfully applied in mixed IÂ +Â II mode, has been reformulated to consider multiaxility mixed IÂ +Â III mode. Two new magnitudes have been proposed and evaluated as useful elements of the Strain Energy Density criteria. The material selected in this work is graphite which stress strain relationship is approximately linear elastic until fracture, failure data has been taken from bibliography. The experimental programme considers multiaxial loading combining tension, mode I, mode II and mode III. The equivalent local mode I concept combined with the Strain Energy Density criteria explains successfully fracture of U-notches and round V-notches under mixed mode. The advantage of this proposal is that all failure data can be summarized in a unique diagram using only mode I parameters.
