Abstract

Novel localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) based U-shaped, polyester waveguides are being demonstrated for biosensing applications. The proposed waveguide sensors are label free, inexpensive and provide a platform for point of care detection systems. Overhead projector (OHP) sheets (∼100 μm thick) were deployed as core material for waveguides. These have good shape memory and excellent combination of optical and mechanical properties. Single-step fabrication of waveguides was achieved without the use of moulds or clean room facilities. The waveguides were immobilized with gold nanoparticles (GNP) and refractive index (RI) sensitivity of 6.2 ΔA/RIU was obtained. They were successfully bio-functionalized to detect myeloperoxidase, down to 56 nM.
