Abstract

The paper presents some general principles regarding the deconstruction of bridges and some typical examples in this direction. Deconstruction is close correlated to environmental sustainability. When bridges reach the end of their design life, deconstruction is necessary; it means the selective dismantling of the structure. Deconstruction includes strengthening of the structure, which is the most environmentally and economically efficient option. Bridges designed from the beginning with a logical deconstruction concept are easier to maintain and adapt to new destinations. Some examples in this direction are presented: a masonry arch bridge, a steel railway bridge and a composite bridge. Also the modular provisory emergency bridge MONA® is described.
