Abstract
Failure of convexity of free energy densities leads to the spontaneous formation of fine structures in response to applied forces. A model based on rigid elasticity and finite plasticity is formulated and the implications of the failure of convexity for the macroscopic energy are indicated. Finally the SAIM-scheme for the concurrent computation of the macroscopic energy during a finite element simulation is introduced.
