•The effects of sleep quality on smoking cessation are understudied.•This relation was examined in a sample of socioeconomically disadvantaged adults.•Poorer pre-quit sleep quality increased the likelihood of post-quit non-abstinence.•Sleep quality during the first week post-quit predicted smoking status at 4 weeks.
