► We examine the factors affecting quality choice for several food categories. ► Data source is the 2004/05 Greek Household Budget Survey. ► We employ Heckman's two-step model. ► Food expenditure (proxy for income) is found to be the most influential variable. ► Other driving factors are household's age structure and head's demographics.
