Abstract
⺠In gift exchange games employers offer lower wages with the risk of losing money. ⺠Effort per wage unit is significantly higher with employers' risk of losing money. ⺠Employers' risk of losing money increases employees' reciprocity. ⺠Risk of losing money increases the credibility of high wage offers as trust signals. ⺠Fairness perception of wages may vary with firm specific cost and risk structure.
