Abstract
⺠The integration of regions is viewed as a merger of populations. ⺠The merger of populations revises people's social space and their comparison set. ⺠The merger increases aggregate relative deprivation and aggravates social distress. ⺠Two types of policy responses to the heightened social distress are considered.
