Abstract
We present empirical evidence regarding the structure of unemployment in the US disaggregated by race, ethnicity, and gender. Popp's (2008) unit-root test reveals that the dynamics of unemployment for all groups is characterized by the hysteresis hypothesis except for Hispanic Males.
⺠We examine the dynamics of US unemployment rates by race, ethnicity, and gender. ⺠All the groups, except for Hispanic Males, exhibit high levels of persistence. ⺠The level of persistence varies substantially by race, ethnicity, and gender. ⺠The level of persistence is higher for Males than Females within each racial group. ⺠The level of persistence is highest for Whites and lowest for Hispanics.
