► According to Persson and Tabellini the electoral rule is a “key” political institution. ► The existing evidence is always based on comparison across countries. ► We discuss the effects of an electoral reform introduced in Italy in 1993. ► According to our evidence the electoral rule could be overestimated in the literature.
