► We decompose the intergenerational correlation coefficient of education. ► This allows us to account for mobility patterns of subgroups of the population. ► We analyse the intergenerational persistence of education in Italy. ► The persistence of educational attainment is studied, decades after major reforms. ► College education remains a sort of glass ceiling for many Italian children.
