Abstract
► There exists robust evidence that distance impacts trade more strongly over time. ► This empirical phenomenon is known as the distance puzzle. ► It stems from estimating the gravity equation year-by-year with cross-country data. ► But the year-by-year regressions may not capture the true cost of distance on trade. ► Thus, declining cost of distance may be amenable with the distance puzzle.
