Abstract
► Exogenous consumption aspirations are included in a growth Barro-type setting. ► Raising income taxes favors growth even in the presence of lump-sum taxes. ► The income tax rate maximizing growth is increasing in the level of aspirations. ► Such policy is compatible with the behavior of taxes observed in actual economies.
