Abstract
⺠Exogenous consumption aspirations are included in a growth Barro-type setting. ⺠Raising income taxes favors growth even in the presence of lump-sum taxes. ⺠The income tax rate maximizing growth is increasing in the level of aspirations. ⺠Such policy is compatible with the behavior of taxes observed in actual economies.
