Abstract
âºWe use a gravity equation to derive a comprehensive bilateral measure of trade costs. âºWe derive a bilateral measure of trade costs for Spain in 1870-1913. âºWe test the soundness of alternative direct measures of specific costs for Spain. âºThe measure is only robust for the protection indexes that control for composition.
