Abstract
⺠The nature and tradition of human geography in South Africa is discussed. ⺠Changes and challenges to the discipline are discussed. ⺠The importance of the developmental and applied tradition is acknowledged. ⺠A gradual increase in critical and post-colonially informed work is noted. ⺠New avenues for empirically-grounded and theoretically-informed work are highlighted.
