Abstract
⺠Geographers' critiques of fear in driving violent counter-terrorism initiatives have tended to be discursive, with little explorations into how fear can be responded to, reshaped and transformed into other emotions and actions. ⺠Rather than presupposing a natural conjoining of fear and violence, this paper argues that just as destructive purposes can be borne out of affective consequences, the possibility also arises for the channeling of emotions into nonviolent outcomes. ⺠Nonviolence serves as a useful concept in getting beyond geopolitical critiques by offering an alternative way forward in terms of radical praxis. ⺠Focuses on the under-researched (non-'western') context of the Philippines to show how local actors repudiate state framings of fear and terrorism for the augmenting of sustainable, peaceful futures.
