Abstract
⺠We model optimal effort provision in cardinal, ordinal, and piece rate tournaments. ⺠We provide testable predictions that distinguish between two tournament models. ⺠We implement an empirical test using data from a real effort laboratory experiment. ⺠We find that ability and effort are neither compliments nor substitutes.
