Abstract
⺠Field-of-use restrictions (FOUR) are a widely used clause in licensing agreements. ⺠FOUR can improve production efficiency when a technology has several applications. ⺠But there may be a risk of overlap between fields if the licensor is not careful. ⺠The paper derives the optimal license contract using a moral hazard framework. ⺠The contract may include decreasing royalties and output restrictions.
