Abstract
⺠We simulate a computable OLG model to evaluate Japanese public health insurance. ⺠An increase in the co-payment rate could promote economic growth and welfare. ⺠This is because higher co-payments encourage people to save in preparation. ⺠Also, the effect on future economic burdens of reducing medical costs is small. ⺠The rise in health benefits can mainly be explained by Japan's aging population.
