► We identify a serious miscalculation in a previously published paper. ► The metric market to book ratio is flawed when a firm has negative equity. ► Almost 12% of our Malaysian politically connected firms have negative equity. ► Fresh evidence borrowing Malaysian PCON firms have lower ROA than non-PCON firms.
