Abstract
⺠I study rating agencies' incentives to reveal information about their client firms. ⺠Rating agencies use public and private information about a firm. ⺠A monopolistic rating agency may conform to public information. ⺠With competition, a rating agency may contradict public information. ⺠A good rating can be issued more often with competition than in a monopoly.
