Abstract
⺠We examine the role of collateral in emerging markets' lending. ⺠Micro data include loan terms, household characteristics and relationship characteristics. ⺠Most loans are provided without any tangible assets as collateral. ⺠Guarantees are the relatively most important substitute. ⺠Other substitutes are relationship lending and modified loan terms.
