Abstract
⺠This study addresses a puzzle that China achieved spectacular performance despite weak institutions. ⺠We draw on a World Bank survey of 1566 manufacturing enterprises in 18 Chinese cities. ⺠We found that property rights protection had a positive impact on enterprise productivity. ⺠These findings were robust to various sensitivity checks, including control for endogeneity.
