► I introduce adversarial and inquisitorial systems in a financial contracting model. ► Data show evidence collection is more lawyer-intensive in the former. ► Theory consistent with data if lawyers are more productive than judges. ► Or if investors are wealthier than entrepreneurs. ► Manipulation of evidence by lawyers has an ambiguous impact on finance.
