Abstract
⺠Inflation in central and eastern Europe dropped sharply in the early 2000s. ⺠Contribution of changes in retail market competition to the drop was overlooked. ⺠Intensified retail competition was linked to significant decline in food inflation. ⺠Potential effects on living conditions and welfare.
