Abstract
⺠Sub-optimal land allocation can result following privatization that establish formal but imperfect property rights, due to historical land ownership and legal constraints. ⺠Land in forced co-ownership in Bulgaria is 28-40% points more likely to be left abandoned or used by less efficient farm organizations. ⺠Co-ownership is related to significant and substantial welfare losses.
