Abstract
⺠Limited competition in the banking sector causes a high loan-deposit spread. ⺠Frequently governments oppose bank competition. ⺠Governments face a trade-off between taxable bank profits and economic growth. ⺠Firm-level corruption distorts the trade-off towards more restrictive regulation.
